New Gear Day: EOS R

Posted

For the past five to six years I’ve been shooting my landscapes, weddings and vernacular photos with my Canon EOS 5D Mark III (And 1DX for work). I had a Lowepro Transit 350 AW backpack to store my camera, lenses and accessories - however it was a complete camera bag, with insufficient space for my everyday items. This made bringing my camera around every day quite difficult, especially when I had to bring books, laptops, a bottle, and various other things to uni and school.

Also the 5D3 is quite big and heavy and bulky.

So I started to research into looking at a new smaller and lightweight camera, as well as a new camera bag that would be able to hold the camera.

I had my mind set on the somewhat new EOS R series system, either the EOS RP or the EOS R. The EOS R6 and EOS R5 cameras were in excess of $5000, but I only wanted to spent at most $3000.

I also had a look at the Sony cameras (i.e. the A7 models), since Sony has been since been heading in the right direction, listening to their customers' requests and needs unlike Canon (although I guess now they’re finally taking their step) - but ultimately I decided to stick to the Canon ecosystem since I already had all my EF-mount glass.

Comparing the $3000 EOS R to the $1600 EOS RP.

Whilst I don’t really intend on that much filming, I decided to go with the EOS R - especially given the fact that it shares the same battery as my other cameras. I wouldn’t want to bring two sets of batteries as well as their chargers everywhere I go…

I also purchased the EF to RF Adapter with the Control Ring, and a (bunch of) Peak Design strap(s) to go with the camera.

In terms of the camera bag, I bit the bullet and gambled on a camera bag (Caden L5 Camera Bag) from Ali Express.
Upon receiving it and using it every day, I’m very pleased with its construction and durability :)

And here are my three cameras :) Banana for scale /s
